چکیده

This paper investigates the use and performance of some recently proposed models for temporal masking in wideband audio quality assessment algorithms. Three published temporal masking models are incorporated into the ITU-standardised PEAQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Audio Quality) algorithm, to assess the accuracy of such models in predicting subjective audio quality. The PEAQ algorithm already includes a temporal masking model, however, the paper shows that the performance of PEAQ may be improved for certain distortions by using a different temporal masking model. Furthermore, a novel temporal masking model is presented in this paper, that appears to further improve the perceptual accuracy of the PEAQ algorithm for most distortions examined.

Comparison of auditory masking models for speech coding

In this paper various auditory masking models recently developed for audio coding are compared and evaluated for telephone bandwidth speech coding applications. Four such models are outlined and their performance evaluated using a Wavelet Packet Transform based subband coder. The models are compared on the basis of the resulting perceptual speech quality and bit rate requirements. Results show ...

Perceptual Domain Based Speech and Audio Coder

This paper applies a new auditory filterbank to wide band speech and audio coding. The coding algorithm is capable of producing high quality coded speech and audio, which account for temporal as well as spectral details. The analysis and synthesis are performed using a critical-bandrate auditory filterbank with superior auditory masking properties. The outputs of the analysis filters are proces...

Perceptual wavelet packet audio coder

Traditional wavelet packet audio compression algorithms do not utilize the temporal masking properties of the human auditory system, relying instead on simultaneous masking models. This paper presents the design and implementation of a perceptual wavelet audio coder by incorporating temporal and simultaneous masking models. The efficiency of the encoder was assessed based upon the number of bit...

A masking-threshold-adapted weighting filter for excitation search

Most LPC-based audio coders improve reproduction quality by using predictor coefficients to embody perceptual masking in noise spectral shaping. Since the predictor coefficients were originally derived to characterize sound production models, they cannot precisely describe the human ear’s nonlinear responses to frequency and loudness. In this paper, we report on new approaches to exploiting the...

Auditory Time-Frequency Masking: Psychoacoustical Data and Application to Audio Representations

In this paper, the results of psychoacoustical experiments on auditory time-frequency (TF) masking using stimuli (masker and target) with maximal concentration in the TF plane are presented. The target was shifted either along the time axis, the frequency axis, or both relative to the masker. The results show that a simple superposition of spectral and temporal masking functions does not provid...
